Trà Giang, born in 1942 in Phan Thiết, Bình Thuận, with her ancestral hometown in Quảng Ngãi.
She was the first actress to be awarded the title of People’s Artist by the state in 1984. To this day, People’s Artist Trà Giang remains a symbol and pride of Vietnamese cinema, with iconic roles in films such as “Sister Tư Hậu”, “17th Parallel, Days and Nights”, “The Saint’s Day”, “The First Love”, “Little Girl of Hanoi”, among others. In the early 1999, by a chance encounter, People’s Artist Trà Giang began her journey as a painter. However, it was in late 1999, when her husband, Professor Nguyễn Bích Ngọc, passed away, that painting became a means for spiritual solace.
From an actress who dabbled in painting to ease her sorrow, People’s Artist Trà Giang gradually transformed into a true painter. Since then, she has created numerous works and participated in many group and solo exhibitions. Among them were some impressive solo exhibitions such as: “Summer Comes” (2006), “Spring” (2016), “Across the Northwest” (2018)… The main theme, encompassing and running through Trà Giang’s paintings, is flowers and the landscapes of Vietnam.
At the age of 82, People’s Artist Trà Giang is presenting yet another solo exhibition, and this may be her final one, due to health and age.
The exhibition will showcase 25 carefully selected oil paintings of various sizes, featuring her most recent works from recent years. It is still about flowers and landscapes, but not merely about scenery—it captures emotions. Colors do not simply stay on the surface but resonate with the artist’s inner state. Amidst the landscapes, one can faintly see the presence of anonymous, humble figures.
